It´s so sad, but last year a total area in the Amazon comparable to the size of New Jersey was wiped out due to illegal logging, clearing for cattle and soy bean production. Nicknamed “the lungs of the planet”, the Amazon Rainforest absorbs harmful CO2 gases and produces over 20% of the world´s oxygen. Rain forests are far more effective than temperate forests in the production and subsequent absorption of CO2 gases so it is critically important not to ignore their plight.
